David de Gea ‘considering surprise retirement’ as Man Utd icon faces humiliation

David de Gea is considering a shock retirement from football amid his struggles to find a new club after leaving Manchester United in the summer, according to reports. The Old Trafford icon faces a humiliating end to his career as he continues to wait for the right opportunity to arrive.

De Gea left United as a free agent in July after contract negotiations broke down as his performances slumped at the end of the season.

Erik ten Hag’s desire to replace the 32-year-old with a goalkeeper more suited to his demands saw a new deal offered on significantly reduced terms from his £375,000-a-week salary.

But discussions collapsed, meaning De Gea departed disappointed without receiving a fitting farewell after 12 years at United.

He has failed to reignite his career after leaving M16, still without a club almost two months into the new season.

And according to The Guardian, De Gea is pondering retirement if he isn’t tabled an offer to become a top club’s No 1 goalkeeper.

The former Spain international has turned away several approaches, including from Saudi Arabian clubs wanting to add him to the nation’s influx of high-profile talent.
