Liverpool forward Luis Diaz has released a statement calling for the Ejercito de Liberacion Nacional (ELN) to release his father. The winger scored against Luton Town on Sunday night and showed a message on his undershirt calling for his dad to be freed.
Diaz’s father, Luis Manuel Diaz, and mother, Cilenis Marulanda, were kidnapped at gun-point last Saturday in Colombia. The winger’s mother was soon released, but Luis Manuel remains at large and the Colombia government have announced that the ELN are responsible for his abduction.
Diaz returned to the Liverpool team for the first time since the kidnappings and marked the occasions with a crucial goal against Luton Town, scoring a late header to ensure that the Reds secured a 1-1 drawn. The ex-Porto star celebrated by showing a shirt that called for his father to be granted ‘freedom’, and he has now sent a pointed message to the ELN.
In an Instagram post, Diaz wrote a heartfelt statement accompanied by a photo of him lifting his shirt to show a message that read ‘ Libertdad para papa’ which means ‘freedom for dad’. His post continued: “Today the soccer player is not speaking to you, today Lucho Diaz, the son of Luis Manuel Diaz, is speaking to you. My dad is a tireless worker, our pillar in the family and he is kidnapped.

“I ask the ELN for the prompt release of my dad, and I ask international organizations to intercede for his freedom. Every second, every minute, our anguish grows. My mother, my brothers and I are desperate, distressed and without words to describe what we are feeling. This suffering will only end when we have him back home.
“I beg you to release him immediately, respecting his integrity and ending this painful wait as soon as possible. In the name of love and compassion, we ask that you reconsider your actions and allow us to recover him.

“I thank the Colombians and the international community for the support received, thank you for so many demonstrations of love and solidarity in this difficult time that many families in my country find themselves living.”
It remains to be seen how the ELN respond to the post following Diaz’s post or whether Luis Manuel will remain with the group. Jurgen Klopp sung the praises of Diaz following his late cameo against Luton but ultimately admitted that what is going on in the 26-year-old’s life is far bigger than football.
