Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag told fans to not expect to see Casemiro and Lisandro Martinez return to the pitch until after Christmas.

The Red Devils have been plagued by repeated injury issues this season. In particular, the Dutchman has often found himself short of options in the defensive areas of the pitch.

Raphael Varane, Luke Shaw, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Tyrell Malacia and Martinez have all endured lengthy periods on the sidelines. Unfortunately for the Red Devils, the latter will also be joined in the treatment room by experienced midfielder Casemiro.

When asked about the fitness of Martinez and Casemiro, Ten Hag said: "I have some time schedules, yeah, but it's always difficult to predict that because they can get setbacks during the rehab period so I'm always holding back a little bit on some issues.

"I expect some back but Casemiro and Martinez are really strong injuries and I don't expect them back before Christmas. It's several weeks."

Martinez has not played in the Premier League since United's 3-1 home loss to Brighton and Hove Albion on September 16. The World Cup winner recently said he will have to be patient if he is to make a full recovery from the metatarsal injury he has been nursing.

"I am in the process of recovery and happy to be here visiting the club," he told TNT Sports. "It is the second time that an injury like this has happened to me. So, you have to be patient."

Meanwhile, Casemiro suffered a hamstring injury during United's 3-0 loss to Newcastle United in the League Cup. This season has proven to be a difficult one for Ten Hag and his players.

As well as tumbling out of the Carabao Cup, United are also currently residing in third position of their Champions League group and in eighth position in the Premier League.
