Erik ten Hag called out for treatment of Man Utd star Scott McTominay

Manchester United great Peter Schmeichel has questioned Erik ten Hag’s treatment of Scott McTominay. The midfielder scored twice in stoppage time to beat Brentford on Saturday to raise question marks over why he hasn’t featured more regularly this season.

McTominay came on in the 87th minute at Old Trafford to replace Sofyan Amrabat. United were trailing 1-0 at the time but the Scot came up with goals in the 93rd and 97th minutes to pull off a remarkable comeback and ease pressure on Ten Hag.

It was only McTominay’s fifth appearance in the league this term, three of which have been as a substitute. He was regularly linked with a move away in the summer transfer window.

West Ham had a bid rejected as United held out for a fee of £45million. No club were prepared to match that valuation and McTominay stayed put.

But Schmeichel has questioned why the 26-year-old was up for sale in the first place. The former goalkeeper says McTominay is a vital player for Ten Hag and proved it with his impact at the weekend.

Ten Hag says 'Man Utd in heart' of matchwinner McTominay

Schmeichel told Premier League Productions: “He’s got the ability to do that. I don’t understand what coaches are doing. Scott McTominay was up for sale all summer and I don’t understand that.

“He’s a fantastic player, you need utility players. You need players that can play different positions, that can come from the bench and change the course of the game and he’s definitely one of them.

“You bring in players and you sit there with big question marks, why is that player there?”

Following the win, Ten Hag defended United’s stance on selling McTominay in the summer. The Dutchman insists he is happy McTominay stayed and was not surprised with his impact against the Bees.

Ten Hag said: “You know with Scott you get drive and energy on the pitch. He can make a goal, he can arrive and his willingness is very strong.

“His feeling for this club is very strong, he plays with all his heart. He will always defend the colours of this club.

“Every player has a price – but he has a big value, sporting and also economic. No one matched that value and I am happy to have a player like Scott McTominay in the squad.

“He is Manchester United in every way. In every minute he will fight for the match. Those players you need.”
