Erik ten Hag once hinted how he will deal with Jadon Sancho and Man Utd saga

Man Utd players' feelings towards Jadon Sancho after latest Erik ten Hag spat

Jadon Sancho will likely need to seek forgiveness from Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag after a quote from the Dutchman’s biography resurfaced. The Red Devils winger publicly slated Ten Hag on Sunday after his head coach claimed his training performances were below-par.

Ten Hag revealed after United’s 3-1 defeat at Arsenal that Sancho had been omitted from the squad due to his training displays. The 18-year-old midfielder Dan Gore and 20-year-old starlet Hannibal Mejbri were both selected on the substitutes’ bench ahead of the former Borussia Dortmund man.

But Sancho hit out at Ten Hag later that evening, telling fans that the comments were “untrue”. He was then linked with a sensational exit to Saudi Arabia but a move did not materialise before the Pro League window slammed shut on Thursday.

A passage from a book about the United boss – Ten Hag: The Biography – gives a revealing insight into how the former Ajax tactician might deal with Sancho’s case. Ten Hag says he will often deal with misconduct differently behind closed doors.

In a chapter that focuses on Quincy Promes being charged with attempted murder and Andre Onana being handed a 12-month ban for failing a drugs test, Ten Hag says: “These things happen to people.

“Usually, I can forgive someone, but I never forget. I protect people outwardly. Internally, it can be different, if someone has crossed the line.

“Ultimately, this is top sport. You have to be able to trust each other, otherwise you cannot achieve results. If my protective attitude goes at the expense of myself, then so be it.

“I am the manager, the leader, I do that in the best interests of Ajax and the result. My own situation is secondary to that.”

Sancho has endured a tough two years at United since his big-money transfer from Dortmund after Euro 2020. He struggled to fit into Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s system and his move was overshadowed by the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo.

Following Ten Hag’s appointment, Sancho was soon given time off to work with coaches in the Netherlands, focusing on improving his form, confidence and mental health. He returned with a goal against Leeds but his inconsistency continued.

Sunday was the first time that Ten Hag has publicly criticised Sancho for his conduct behind-the-scenes. The move appears to have split opinion, with some reports suggesting that United’s players are backing the head coach.
