Gerrard saved Richards humiliation with magic boots in England training camp

Micah Richards has shared a hilarious story about his first-ever England training camp, involving Steven Gerrard, a pair of magic boots and a sprinkling of Scouse wit. The former Manchester City full-back, then 18 years old, had received his first senior call-up for an international friendly against the Netherlands in 2006 when disaster struck.

Caught up in the excitement of representing his country for the very first time, Richards had forgotten to check his kit bag before travelling with the rest of the squad. When he arrived at base camp, he realised the Man City kitman had accidentally packed four left-footed boots.

But luckily for Big Meeks, Gerrard – who happened to have the same size feet – was on hand to help him out. “I don’t know if I’ve told this story before but I remember my first training session [for England]. I’m so excited, you’re in your just before you go into training,” he said on The Rest is Football Podcast.

“Training was normally about 11, it was quarter to 11, I always took my own boots and I got my boots from the Manchester City kitman – who was Les Chapman at the time.

“I had two pairs – moulds and studs, I go to look in my bag, clean them and as I’m going down I realise it’s four left feet.

“I go in the corridor, as you’re going out your room, I see Steven Gerrard. It’s the first time I’ve met him, I said ‘Stevie, you can’t borrow us a pair of boots can you?’

“Luckily, we’re a similar size, we go out and it was the best session I’ve ever had. I think it was [Gerrard’s boots that made the difference] so I say to Steven Gerrard afterwards, can I have the boots? And he went ‘f*** off’.”

Co-hosts Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer burst out laughing as the former quipped: “That’s amazing, no wonder you did not get that many England caps,” in reference to Richards’ 13 England caps.
