The reasons behind Lionel Messi’s move to the MLS
It’s been a full house at pretty much every match Lionel Messi has played in since he joined Inter Miami in the MLS, but now the World Cup-winning captain is buying his own piece of American real estate.
The former Barcelona legend has sent shockwaves through US Soccer after completing his move from Paris Saint-Germain with a series of spellbinding performances that have completely reversed the fortunes of David Beckham’s club.
The Argentinian only made his debut on July 21, scoring an injury-time match-winning free-kick in typical fashion. He has since gone on to score 11 goals in 11 appearances, win Miami’s first-ever trophy – the Leagues Cup, reach the final of the US Open Cup and help drag a side that had not won in 11 matches prior to his arrival, off the bottom of the Eastern Conference and got them dreaming about making the play-offs.
With it safe to assume on that basis that the 36-year-old has already adjusted to playing in a new league, he has now turned his attention to putting down roots in the area and it looks like he has now found the dream property for his family to call home.
Messi has secured a deal to buy a beautiful waterfront mansion in the exclusive area of Fort Lauderdale. It will set him back a cool £8.6m ($9m).
The immaculate Miami abode boasts 10 bedrooms, a swimming pool, spa room and not one, but two boat decks for when he fancies a sail down the adjacent river. The 10,500 square foot superhome has a three-car garage from which it will only take the seven times Ballon d’Or winner a quarter of an hour to get to Inter Miami’s DRV PNK Stadium and training ground.
Messi’s contract with his new club runs until 2025 when they are expected to move into a new 25,000-seater stadium outside Fort Lauderdale, but it remains to be seen whether he will ever grace the turf there himself.

Although he has only just found a home for his tribe, the Messi family have already made a £5.85m investment in the area by acquiring the whole ninth floor of Regalia, which according to GOAL is an ultra-luxurious Florida condominium development in the Sunny Isles Beach area.
The development is close to Sea Ranch Lakes, where teammate and former Barcelona accomplice Sergio Busquets now lives.
Should Inter Miami end up finishing the season as MLS champions, a team party at Messi’s waterfront party home looks like a very enticing proposition for his teammates.
