Man Utd backed to help Arsenal solve dilemma thanks to ‘ruthless’ Jim Ratcliffe

Andre Onana is struggling at Man Utd | Football Digest

Manchester United have been backed to launch a sensational move for Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale if Andre Onana’s problems persist. The Red Devils stopper has cost Erik ten Hag dearly in the Champions League just months after splashing £47million to name him David de Gea’s successor.

Onana has kept the joint-most clean sheets in his debut Premier League season – five in 13 appearances – and boasts one of the competition’s better save success rates.

However, his struggles in Europe have heavily contributed to United’s position at rock bottom of Group A in the Champions League.

Onana produced a howler in the opening 4-3 defeat at Bayern Munich, the 3-2 home loss against Galatasaray and two in Wednesday’s return fixture in Istanbul.

United squandered 2-0 and 3-1 leads in the gut-wrenching 3-3 draw, leaving Ten Hag’s side on the brink of an early exit.

Meanwhile, Ramsdale has lost his place as Arsenal’s first-choice goalkeeper. Mikel Arteta replaced the England international with David Raya in the summer but claimed both were competing for the No 1 shirt.

That competition has seemingly proven unhealthy, with both stoppers producing shaky performances in recent months. But United could help Arteta solve the dilemma by offering Ramsdale an out.

Former United player Alan Brazil touted the 25-year-old as a potential option for Ten Hag to call on if Onana continues to stifle his project.

Gabby Agbonlahor played down his claims, but the Scot highlighted Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s arrival as a significant factor in United’s future transfer dealings.

Brazil asked on talkSPORT: “Onana is an accident waiting to happen – what about Ramsdale at Manchester United? I think if Ramsdale wants to go, he’ll get a move. He’s not playing!

“There’s a new owner coming in now, he’s putting in £1.3billion, he might say: ‘Right, I’m now in charge of transfers – he goes. We’re not going to win anything with him.’

“Which would be harsh on Onana because he’s a good shot-stopper at times, and he’s made some good saves. But you don’t become a multi-billionaire by luck. Sir Jim Ratcliffe will be ruthless.

“He might just say: ‘We’ve got to get rid of the deadwood now, I want us at the top again. This is not good enough just qualifying for the Champions League.

“‘We want to be the champions of England and favourites to win the Champions League.’ That’s the way he’s got to think if he’s putting that kind of money in.”

Ten Hag is unlikely to lose faith in Onana so soon after bringing him to Old Trafford. And if the Dutchman ultimately accepts he made a mistake, Ramsdale to United can’t be high on the probability scale.
