McBurnie sent off for ‘second elbow in nine minutes’ to leave Sheffield furious

Oli McBurnie was given his marching orders on Saturday afternoon for 'two elbows in nine minutes' that left Sheffield United fans furious.

United travelled to Lancashire to clash with Vincent Kompany's Burnley – who quickly raced into a two-goal lead. And their task went up a notch before half-time, when McBurnie was flashed his second yellow.

McBurnie had received a yellow card earlier in the first-half for elbowing Dara O'Shea – before committing the same foul on the same player on the stroke of the half. "What an idiot," Chris Sutton fumed on the BBC.

"To go and do the same foul, for which he was lucky not to see red the first time, when your team is 2-0 down and the manager is under pressure, is so stupid from McBurnie.

"In my opinion there was intent in both challenges, whether that is frustration or whatever it was, he got two yellows but he could easily have gotten two reds."

And United fans agreed: "Captain material apparently… McBurnie is thick as mince. None of them fit to wear the shirt."

"McBurnie sent off. No surprise, heard the first incident on the radio and knew it was coming," a second fumed. While a third said: "Get back in those changing rooms and scream at McBurnie what the f*** are you doing."

Sheffield were battered 5-0 by Burnley after collapsing in the second-half.

Saturday afternoon marked McBurnie's second red of the season – after he was also given his marching orders against Tottenham Hotspur nine games ago.
