Paul Scholes has admitted his concerns over Manchester United’s lack of creativity, claiming that the club has seen a ‘real drop-off in quality’ during the absences of Casemiro and Christian Eriksen.

It came after Harry Kane returned to torment the Red Devils, helping Bayern Munich defeat Man United 1-0, with the England captain playing a perfectly timed pass that allowed Kingsley Coman to cut through Man United’s defensive lines and score for the hosts.

The defeat confirmed the end of United’s Champions League campaign for this season, but Erik ten Hag’s side were dealt further blows during the match, with Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw both leaving the field with injuries.

The Red Devils will finish bottom of Group A having won just one game in Europe so far this season. And after the match, former Man United defender, Scholes believed that the club is currently lacking in creativity, with Rasmus Hojlund, who has scored five goals in the tournament, struggling for service.

‘I don’t think defensively was was a problem,’ Scholes said to TNT Sports. So actually, we thought our creativity in the middle of pitch was a major problem today.

The former Man United midfielder claimed that United were not giving Rasmus Hojlund enough chances to score

Since arriving in the summer, Hojlund has failed to score in the Premier League, despite having scored five goals in the Champions League

‘As Rio [Ferdinand] said when you haven’t got Casemiro in the team, when haven’t got [Christian] Ericksen, there’s a massive drop off in the team.

‘There’s no doubt about that, massive drop off in quality.’

Eriksen and Casemiro are just two of a long list of players on Man United’s injury list that also includes Tyrell Malacia, Mason Mount and Victor Lindelof.

During the game, United had five attempts on goal, while Bayern had 11, with the home side having just one shot on target.

And Scholes admitted that his fears lie with his former side’s ability to create chances, with Hojlund still yet to score his first goal in the Premier League, before blasting two of United’s wide players as ‘selfish’.

‘The big worry for is the centre-forward, we can’t create a chance and he’s scored five goals in the Champions League,’ he said.

‘He’s not scored a League goal he hasn’t had a chance and I don’t think he had a chance on Saturday.

‘It’s a big concern from where the goals are going to come from. You expect creativity not only from your wide players Antony and [Alejandro] Garnacho but they’re actually quite selfish players and they are not players who are looking up and are  thinking about scoring their own goals, thinking about scoring for yourself/

‘Obviously from last year they’ve not get Rashford as well, he was in flying form but has not had that type of form this year.’

Scholes also added that he feels there had been a real ‘drop off’ in the side’s quality following the absence of Casemiro

Despite that, Scholes lumped praise on their captain, Bruno Fernandes, who played in a slightly deeper role on Tuesday night.

‘I actually thought Fernandes did well in a deeper position tonight. He did that in a couple of Europa League games last year and was very good in big games.

‘So I think he can do that. Can he do it for a long time? I don’t know.

‘I think with him and Eriksen playing in the team it brings a bit more creativity it brings a bit more quality I think Casimiro adds quality as well and control.’
