The Netherlands international is keen to leave Bayern before Friday’s transfer deadline having struggled to secure a regular role in the team since his arrival in a €18.5 million (£16m) deal from Ajax last year.

Both Liverpool and United have approached Gravenberch’s representatives this summer but the two Premier League clubs are yet to submit an offer to Bayern, who had initially planned to keep the midfielder.

However, The Athletic reports that Liverpool have now opened negotiations with Bayern and are in talks over a transfer fee for the Netherlands international.

The report claims that Liverpool are working on a permanent deal and Bayern are open to selling the 21-year-old, providing they can sign a replacement.

Crucially, it’s claimed that Gravenberch’s preference is to join Liverpool over United, who are prioritising a deal for Fiorentina’s Sofyan Amrabat instead.

Gravenberch has already played under United manager Erik ten Hag at Ajax but Klopp is understood to be a huge admirer of the midfielder.

Speaking in June, Gravenberch made it clear that he would look to leave Bayern if he did not receive more minutes having started just three Bundesliga games last season.

‘I expected to play more minutes than I did. I thought I would get some more chances,’ Gravenberch told ESPN.

‘It’s about just wanting to play, that’s the most important thing at my age.

‘I hope this can happen at Bayern Munich, otherwise we’ll just have to look further.

‘I told everyone that I don’t want another year like that. Of course you can’t always be in the starting XI, but you can still play regularly, you can get a lot of minutes.’

Bayern, meanwhile, have targeted Fulham midfielder Joao Palhinha but the Premier League club are demanding a £60m fee for the 28-year-old, who they signed for £20m from Sporting CP last year.

The Bundesliga champions are also considering Scott McTominay but while Thomas Tuchel is in favour of a move for the Manchester United midfielder, Bayern’s hierarchy are split.
