A courtside spectator at the US Open was ejected on Tuesday after a complaint from leading German player Alexander Zverev that the patron had uttered the “the most famous Hitler phrase”.

In dramatic scenes on centre court after midnight in New York, a clearly annoyed Zverev called out the patron, who had shouted from the stands. The chair umpire reacted immediately to help identify the fan, who was swiftly escorted from Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Late in a fourth round five-set match between Zverev and Italian Jannik Sinner, the German stopped playing to complain about the spectator, who was sitting close to the players’ seats on court.

“He just said the most famous Hitler phrase there is in this world. It’s unacceptable. This is unbelievable,” Zverev could be heard saying.

Experienced chair umpire James Keothavong responded immediately.

“Who said that? Who said that? Who said that?

“OK, we’re going to get him out. We’ll get him out.

“Ladies and gentlemen, as a courtesy to both players, please remain fair and respect the players.”

Security staff were cheered as they removed the patron.

Zverev leads Sinner in 2-0 in the final set.
