Jamie Carragher hit out at West Ham’s ’embarrassing’ performance in their humiliating 5-1 defeat against Liverpool in their Carabao Cup quarter-final at Anfield on Wednesday night.

The Hammers went into the game off the back of a 3-0 league win at home to Wolves on Sunday, but looked off the pace from the outset as the Reds ran riot, with Curtis Jones netting twice and Dominik Szoboszlai, Cody Gakpo and Mohamed Salah also getting on the scoresheet.

Jones’s second goal saw him slalom into the penalty area before finding the bottom corner, with West Ham failing to put a single tackle in.

As Liverpool’s players celebrated their comfortable win together, Carragher asked the question on commentary: ‘How embarrassing have West Ham been tonight?’

David Moyes had opted to make six changes to the team that beat Wolves, but it was still a surprise to see his side completely dominated from start to finish.

Back in the Sky Sports studio, former West Ham manager Harry Redknapp was also dismayed by what he’d seen from the visitors as they crashed out of the cup with a whimper.

Analysing the fifth and final goal, Redknapp said: ‘Terrible, terrible defending. They’ve got their back four in place. Watch him come inside, look. Look at the effort from Ogbonna, look at the effort to stop him. I don’t know what he’s doing.

‘He’s turned his body sideways on, to do what I don’t know. It’s really poor. West Ham have done great earlier in the year, recently a couple of results in Europe. But tonight they were very, very poor.’

Reflecting on West Ham’s display as a whole, Redknapp admitted he was bitterly disappointed by it and felt they could have slipped to an even heavier defeat.

‘I really did expect a lot more from West Ham tonight. I think they’ve done well to get away with five in the end,’ he added.

‘They’ve had two shots and Liverpool have had 29 shots, and that’s how one-sided it was. There was a massive gulf in class and energy and everything between the two teams.’
