Joe Cole and his Channel 4 colleagues were serenaded with an X-rated chant as they tried to dissect England’s drab draw with North Macedonia.

The channel picked up the rights to national team games for the Euro 2024 qualifiers and the Nations League, but their coverage hasn’t been to every fan’s taste. And supporters in Skopje made their feelings clear from pitchside with chants of “Channel 4 is f****** s***”, which would have been clearly heard by presenter Jules Breach, Cole and fellow pundit Joleon Lescott.

Following a lacklustre end to England’s otherwise successful qualifying campaign, the chants provided light relief to Three Lions followers. One said: “That channel 4 chant has made me laugh way more than it should.”

Another agreed: “England fans in the background [singing] 'channel 4 is f****** s***’. Can't disagree. Always thought ITV were poor, but c4 has been next level.”

A third added: “England fans singing 'CHANNEL 4 IS F****** S***! CHANNEL 4 IS F****** S***!' during the North Macedonia v England post match piece, which is live on Channel 4.”

A fourth quipped: “Lol, the England fans singing ‘Channel 4 is f****** s***’ to the reporters.”

Another fan also saw the funny side: “The England fans loudly chanting Channel 4 is f****** s*** whilst they are talking to Joe Cole was brilliant. As for [co-commentator] Dion Dublin, he is absolutely terrible and why does he keep trying to be funny?”

Meanwhile, Cole had strong words for referee Filip Glova, who controversially awarded the home side a penalty shortly before half-time. The spot-kick was converted on the rebound by Enis Bardhi after being initially saved by Jordan Pickford.

It had been awarded after Rico Lewis’ stray hand caught Bojan Miovski as he attempted to head clear, with ref Glova pointing to the spot after consulting his pitchside VAR monitor.

"It’s absurd," raged Cole. "The ref saw it in real time and you know the guy is kidding, look at the guy rolling around on the floor. You’re going to get people running into people’s hands and elbows in the box now. The ref – we’ve found one.”

Fans unhappy with Channel 4’s coverage will be relieved to know that England games are switching back to ITV in 2024.
