Joelinton missed a crucial chance to equalise for Newcastle in their 2-0 Champions League loss at Borussia Dortmund.

The Newcastle player headed wide 56 minutes in after receiving Tino Livramento’s cross from the right at the far post.

In a game of few chances for Eddie Howe’s men it was a crucial moment and Dortmund went on to double their lead and win 2-0.

Goals from Niclas Fullkrug and Julian Brandt in either half put Dortmund top of Group F and left Newcastle third with four points after four games.

Jermaine Jenas told TNT Sports: ‘He had the moment. The team responded brilliantly to the changes [made by Eddie Howe]. The ball put into the box by Livramento was on a plate for Joelinton – he has to score.’

‘From a defensive point of view, it’s poor from Newcastle [for second goal]. Ball watching, not tracking runners, and missing chances has cost them that game.’

The result means Newcastle have lost both legs against Dortmund in the group stages.

After battling to a 0-0 draw at AC Milan, Newcastle swept aside PSG at St James’s Park, regaling fans with beautiful football in a 4-1 rout.

Since then, they have lost 1-0 on their own turf to Dortmund and 2-0 at Signal Iduna Park.

While they are only three points off Dortmund, they could end the night bottom of their group if Milan get a win against PSG.
